On my 32nd birthday I received a phone call from New Society Publishers, asking if I’d be interested in writing a book about small-scale grain production.
Hell yes!
The next 1.5 years researching, writing and preparing the book for publication taught me MANY lessons about the publishing process. Specifically, I learned:
- don’t commit to writing a book when you already suspect tendinitis is fermenting in your hands/arms/wrists due to lousy ergonomics at your day job;
- do invite a fabulous co-author onboard to help get the job done; and,
- don’t neglect all the work that must be done to promote the book before and after it’s published. (I was silly and got pregnant: the baby came out the same month as the book. As a result, I was useless at promotions.)
Sarah Simpson and my book, Uprisings: a Hands-On Guide to the Community Grain Revolution, is now out of print (thanks to us both getting knocked up and thereafter falling short on the promotions work), but the e-book is still available through the wonderful folks at New Society Publishers.
